Recommended Christian Counselors by Mike Jones

This weekend at The Orchard we continued our series called Baggage.

Scott talked about the tough topic of addiction. We talked about turning to God, telling someone we trust and fighting for freedom from addictions. We can’t overcome addictions on our own, otherwise they wouldn’t be addictions to start with. We need God’s help to do what we can’t do on our own.

Scott also mentioned that we may be at the point where counseling is necessary in order to get past our baggage.  Click here if you need to access a list of currently recommended Christian counselors.

Not sure about Financial Peace University? by orchardblog

Are you on the fence about whether you should go to Financial Peace University @ The Orchard or not?  Listen to what one person who attends The Orchard and has been through FPU had to say…

My wife and I got married in Nov 1999, when I was a 28-year old Youth Minister and she was 3 months into her teaching career after graduating college that May.  Neither of us had any good training as to how to handle our money, but lots of bad examples.  Between the two of us and our cars, student loans, credit cards and financed furniture, we had almost $60K in consumer debt and we didn’t even own a house.  I don’t think we even knew how much trouble we were about to be in…we were clueless.   I can honestly say that I don’t know where we would be if we hadn’t gone through FPU at our church.  Probably normal…broke!  Today, 9 years later, after practicing the “baby-steps” that we learned in FPU, Tricia and I have no debt except our home; we don’t finance ANYTHING; we have an emergency fund, savings and retirement; and best of all we never fight about money!  [That just leaves more time to fight about sex and housework…I’M KIDDING!!!!]  The $100 that I spent 9 years ago has paid for itself hundreds of times over.  It doesn’t matter whether you’re broke, “normal,” or rich (even by American standards) FPU has a lot for everyone.  God has blessed us tremendously through what we’ve learned to practice through FPU.
Sign up this weekend in the Foyer-  we promise you won’t regret it!   See you then!

Don’t forget this weekend to sign up for Financial Peace University.  This class will help you think through your budget, get out of debt, save for the kid’s college, maybe even that motorcycle/boat/102″ LCD TV you’ve always wanted (okay, maybe that’s too far!), and give like you’ve never given before.  Sign up in the foyer at the FPU Registration tables after any service.  Just to review, here are the basics:

  • The class will meet from 6:30-8:30 for 6 weeks beginning February 23rd.
  • Childcare will be available for a nominal fee.
  • Topics will include making and sustaining a budget, finding big big bargains, how to save money, etc.
  • The video teaching is by nationally-known author and radio/television personality Dave Ramsey.  Great stuff!
  • The cost of $100 per family includes audio CD’s of every lesson, a workbook, Dave Ramsey’s “Financial Peace Revisited” book, a deluxe envelope system, and more!

Sign up this weekend, see you soon!

Finding Time to Volunteer by orchardblog

What’s the difference between people who volunteer and people who don’t?  About 436 more hours (or 2.5 weeks!) of TV viewing per year.

According to a recent study, people who volunteer give up an average of an hour of TV per day compared to those who don’t.

If you aren’t volunteering, inquire at the Info Counter about how to GET INVOLVED and make a difference!

Ok, so here’s how it worked:

We asked all of you –  The Orchard Community – to buy and donate brand new toys.

The toys were then taken to Bardwell Elementary School on the east side of Aurora for an event called The Christmas Gift Mart which is an amazing event put on by our friends at Community Christian Church in Naperville.

Now the cool part….in case you don’t know…

The gifts weren’t donated to families in need.  They were sold.

For $2 each.

Why?  So that parents that would normally not be able to purchase gifts for their
children would be able to do so without simply receiving a “hand-out.”

And the really, really cool part?

The money raised by the sale of the gifts was poured back into partner schools in two communities.

And get this….  The same exact thing happened in Joliet as well as Aurora!

The results?

9,500 toys collected.

1,000+ volunteers.

3,500 community members blessed in Aurora & Joliet.

$11,500 raised for schools by the Aurora Gift Mart alone!

I’m telling you…  This was one of the most amazing things I have ever been a part of!

And Orchard…..you guys are AMAZING!  Thank you, thank you, thank you for the 800+ toys you donated and to all of you who were a part of serving at the Gift Mart event!  What a beautiful way to celebrate the birth of our Savior.

One great reason to work in Orchard Kids – the KIDS are FUNNIER than Scott! (sorry Scott)

Conversation between a volunteer and 4 year old child in an Orchard Kid’s class this weekend:

Volunteer: “Did you eat a lot of turkey on Thanksgiving?”

4 year old Boy: “What’s a turkey?

Volunteer: ‘Well, its a bird”

Boy: “I never eat birds.”
